3. Pretty Hate Machine was always an excellent record. So much of what Nine Inch Nails would become is evident in this album. This album features a more synth-heavy sound than the follow-up albums Broken and The Downward Spiral had. Lyrically, it's an exquisite album that later NIN albums just never seemed to match/5().

4. I have waited a long long time for a re-mastered version of pretty hate machine. The old cd was very quiet on my ipod and stereo compared to other nine inch nails recordings, but with the new release I'm happy to say that's no longer the case. Loud, punchy, classic nine inch nails, always a great record, now with superior sound quality/5(K).

This album really was ahead of its time, combining the harsh industrial sounds of Ministry and KMFDM but also the songwriting sensibilities of a band like Depeche Mode. It is an album that can be appreciated by just about everyone/5(27).

Virtually ignored upon its release, Pretty Hate Machine gradually became a word-of-mouth cult favorite; despite frequent critical bashings, its stature and historical importance only grew in hindsight. In addition to its stealthy rise to prominence, part of the album's legend was that budding auteur Trent Reznor took advantage of his low-level job at a Cleveland studio to begin recording it.
